What about Biff, then?

Biff, "built like Adonis", the most popular young boy in high school, the captain... a commanding presence, a born leader...

What, Willy wonders, happened to him?

The promise of the young Biff who could order his friends to clean up the cellar [and they listened to him!] seems to have come to nothing. Oh yes, he had this slightly bad habit of "borrowing" things, but really, even his coach did not seem to mind.

What did he say he wanted to do, that is REALLY do? He wanted to be out in the fields with his shirt off, working on a farm. That was definitely not the way to get rich. Was this the only reason that Willy was disappointed in him?

Linda says that Biff is trying to "find himself". Therefore, he must have lost himself somewhere. When we meet the young Biff, he does not seem lost at all. Where and when and how did he lose himself?

Let's put our thoughts down and see how accurately we can predict the revelations about Biff that are to follow.

  1. i think Biff lost all his confidence because of Willy. to linda he said: "He's a fake and doesn't like anybody around who knows!" maybe biff says this because he found out about the second woman in his life. He might have thought he is cheating on linda because finding a married man with another women is not someone anyone would trust.

He might have lost his confidence also because he flunked his finals and therefore didn't graduate.
not graduating was his fault as well as willy's.
instead of studying math he wanted to play football. in which willy supported him.

He often advised his sons to not concentrate more on studies but to be more aware of being a good person, having a good personality and insisted on looks. For example, this is what the old salesman tells teenage Biff about women:
WILLY: "Just wanna be careful with those girls, Biff, that's all. Don't make any promises. No promises of any kind. Because a girl, y'know, they always believe what you tell 'em."

  2. As Willy never stopped Biff from anything when he was young. In his childhood when Biff used to steal stuff, Willy never bothered about it & never taught him what is right and whats not.So Biff has grown up and is confused that what is right for him and what is not! He is unable to choose his job.that is why his confidence is lost.

  3. Well said, Ayush and Kanika!
Both of you have commented on Willy's influence on Biff's life - and the contradictions in his approach!
